The conventional grafting knives are beveled on the left side for the right handed user, where the direction of the cut is towards yourself. Most of the grafting knives are either beveled on both sides of the blade or they are beveled on the left.
Intuitively, we tend to cut away from ourselves but the blades in the market with a left beveled edge will not give you a flat cut that is imperative for successful grafts when you are making cuts with a left bevel.
To increase “takes” on your grafts and to mitigate the risk of injury, you need a grafting knife that is a bit more practical.
This knife with a right beveled edge is intended for making cuts away from yourself, minimizing the risk of injury while giving you perfectly flat cuts on your scion and rootstock. The blades of this knife is made up of 5CR steel that is used for high quality tactical and hunting knives. This is a very hard steel according to Wikipedia on the Rockwell C scale (HRC). The HRC scale is a hardness scale used to gauge resistance to indentation of a material. Rating on 5CR steel is between 55-57 HRC. This means that this grafting knife will keep its edge longer than the other cheap knives using 3CR, or lower grade steel, due to the higher content of carbon in the material composition. Don't let other soft steel knife fool you.
